Doula

Doula is a word you might not know. However, it has existed for decades. It can be traced back to ancient Greek, where it simply meant "helping woman." In the Netherlands, a doula is also called a pregnancy- or birth coach. "She who guides" is a beautiful description of the doula profession. She is part of the birth team, which also includes the midwife or doctor, the partner and (possibly) the maternity nurse. A (clinical) doula is not medically responsible but speaks the exact same language as the care provider to facilitate optimal communication. She knows all about current medical protocol and how to navigate the Dutch midwifery-led system.

Why and for whom is a doula beneficial?

Whether you're giving birth to your first child and feeling uncertain about it, or you're about to deliver a second or third child; a doula always has new information for you. Perhaps you were very dissatisfied with your previous birth experience(s) and want to do things completely differently this time around. Maybe you have a specific feeling about this upcoming birth that you find hard to rationalize on your own. You could even have a big fear for 'the great Dutch unknown' and would like expert guidance next to the standard midwifery led care. As your doula, I would love to get to know your story and think along with you (and your partner).

A professional doula does not judge you for the choices you make. It is your body, your baby. As your doula, I trust that you are capable of making the best possible decisions for yourself. I ensure that your voice is heard. I support you when you cry, when you're angry, irrational, or unkind. I support you in your happiness.

A doula assists during both home/ birthcenter births and hospital births. As your doula, I am constantly present by your side and I will not leave you. I encourage you to ask for what you need or try to interpret what you mean when all you can do is sigh.

Labour is hard work, whether you hire a doula or not. It’s unpredictable, but easier to handle if you’re prepared for all scenarios. Knowledge is power. As your doula, I will help you make your own choices as clearly and well-informed as possible, so that your birth experience doesn’t come at the expense of your own happiness. I strive to leave you with a positive feeling about the birth, no matter how it unfolds. This way, you and your child can make the best possible start together.

Wat does a clinical doula do exactly?

I offer tailored support, no matter where you give birth. As a clinical doula, I specialize in facilitating a homebirth mentality in a clinical setting. Whenever, whatever you want, you are in charge. I follow your lead.

Next topics will certainly be discussed during my prenatal sessions:

  • Managing expectations surrounding the birth of your child by creating a birth plan based on a private childbirth education (CBE) class at your home.
  • What to expect from Dutch hospitals, midwifery practices and birthcenters in greater Amsterdam region.
  • Optimal Fetal Positioning (OFP) might potentially shorten labour and decrease pain levels with the help of Spinning Babies technieken.
  • What (not) to do with breech presentation, VBAC or induced birth due to gestational diabetes or other medical circumstances.
  • Physical and emotional support of both you and your partner during labour, with or without pain medication.
  • 1 on 1 partner support and teaching him/ her massage techniques to best support you: long in time before your due date.
  • Waterbirth in a birthpool, at home or in hospital.
  • Professional support before, during and after a planned or emergency operation, such as gentle c-section or Mother Assisted Caesarean (MAC).

It has been proven in various scientific studies that the presence of a doula leads to a faster labour process and significantly fewer medical interventions. But most importantly: to happier mothers and babies.

Difference Between a Doula and a Midwife
A doula is your consistent factor and is exclusively there for you; she will not leave your side. In both hospitals and midwifery practices there are shift changes, which is unlikely to happen with a doula. This is your birth, it should not influenced by the schedule of the on-duty doctor or midwife. You are the most important. Within a practice or hospital, multiple interests often come into play. A doula safeguards yours (and your partner's) beliefs and wishes.

A doula is curious about your most honest, deeply felt expectations or fears. There is no "right" or "wrong" answer to a question, only your answer. A doula helps to ensure your birth goes as much as possible the way you envisioned it. Even if you like to keep everything under control, your birth is only in your hands to a certain extent. Your doula can help you let go of your worries and be the connecting factor between you and your partner or between you and the medical staff.
